Chelicerate arthropoden waarvan het volwassen lichaam uit 18 somieten bestaat, onderverdeeld in het voorste prosoma (6 somieten) en het achterste opisthosoma (12 somieten); het prosoma met 6 paar aanhangels, 1ste paar preoraal, de laatste twee paren bijkomend verloren bij sommige mijten.
Genitaalopening bij beide sexen op de 2de abdominale somiet (behalve bij sommige mijten); hart gewoonlijk in het abdomen.
Ademhaling bij middel van boeklongen, tracheeën, een combinatie van beide of door de huid (bij sommige cryptozoïsche vormen); Afscheiding door coxale klieren en/of Malphighiaanse buizen. Coxale klieren van coëlemische oorsprong op de tweede tot vijfde prosomatische somieen. Spijsverteringssysteem met een pompende voordarm, middendarm met blinde zakken en een korte achterdarmopening met een anus op de ventrale zijde van het opisthosoma. Zenuwstelsel met een neiging tot versmelting. Niet meer dan twaalf enkelvoudige ogen (ocelli).
Gescheiden sexes maar sexueel dimorphisme dikwijls onopvallend; mannelijke organen variëren. Hofmakerij vaak voorkomend voor de spermaoverdracht. Ontwikkeling in 't algemeen zonder larvaal stadium.
Gewoonlijk terrestrieel, carnivoor, nocturnaal en cryptozoïsch. Sociale organisatie zeldzaam; instinctief gedraag hoog ontwikkeld, distributie variabel.
Ongeveer 70.000 soorten beschreven.

Chelicerate arthropods with adult body composed of 18 somites, divided into anterior prosoma (6 somites) and posterior opisthosoma (12 somites); prosoma with six pairs of appendages, 1st pair preoral, last two pairs secondarily lost in some mites.
Genital opening in both sexes on 2nd abdominal somite (except some mites); heart usually in abdomen.
Respiration by means of book lungs, tracheal tubes, a combination of the two or cutaneous (some cryptozoic forms); excretion by coxal glands and/or Malpihian tubules. Coxal glands of coelomic origin on the second to fifth prosomatic somites. Digestive system with a pumping foregut, midgut with blind sacs and a short hindgut opening with an anus on ventral side of opisthosoma. Nervous system with a tendency to fuse. Not more than 12 simple eyes (ocelli).
The sexes seperate, but sexual dimorphism often inconspicuous; the male organs divers. Courtship frequent before sperm transfer. Development generally without a larval stage.
Usually terrestrial, carnivorous, nocturnal and cryptozoic. Social organization rare; instinctive behaviour highly developed, distribution variable.
